Implementing Odoo the OBS way - Part 1

Our job as Odoo Integrators is fantastic: we have the opportunity to improve the working lives of many people by automating boring tasks while increasing business productivity. However, implementing new management software is usually as difficult as it is effective. Since Odoo covers and connects all parts of a company, it means big changes, many people in the company rely on the software and the accompanying new way of working.

More than 50% of proprietary ERP solutions fail and only 18% of small and medium-sized businesses use fully integrated management software, as traditional solutions are often too complex and too expensive. With the fully integrated, very user-friendly and comparatively inexpensive Odoo, of course, a super alternative with great possibilities is offered here.

In recent years, more than 95% of our implementations have been successful. To achieve this, we have continuously improved our methodology and analyzed which key aspects make a successful project and differentiate it from other projects. Below, we have summarized these aspects under the categories "People & Responsibility" and "Keeping it Simple".

Over the next few months, we will present a small series of blogs addressing some of the biggest challenges that should be considered when implementing enterprise management software.

People & Responsibility

You define the business need (what and why), but we define the solution option (how).

We challenge and question the customer's requirement, and ensure that the benefits outweigh the incurred costs of customization.

Choose the right project manager. They must be problem solvers and understand the needs of the business.

Train the key user early in the project. They should be confident in the product and be committed to the project.

Don't focus on user satisfaction during the project, it continuously changes as the project progresses, likewise expectations differ (users vs. management).

Keeping it Simple

Less on-site meetings, less paperwork, faster decisions, less focus on minutiae, limited scope for initial go-live.

Avoid non-decision-making intermediaries, and reduce participants in the decision-making process to speed it up.

On-site appointments with the customer should only take place for important reasons, e.g. change management or user training.

Reduce customizations to the minimum necessary, as they increase cost and complexity.

Keep budget and time under control. Communicate accordingly if new requirements need more resources.
