Implementing Odoo the OBS way
Administration

Our job as Odoo Integrator is fantastic: we have the opportunity to improve people's lives at work by automating boring tasks and increasing business productivity. However, implementing management software is as difficult as it can be effective. Since Odoo connects all areas of the company, it means big changes and many people in the company rely on the software and the new way of working.

More than 50% of proprietary ERP implementations fail and only 18% of SME`s have implemented a fully integrated management software, because traditional systems are often too complex and too expensive. With the fully integrated, very user-friendly and comparatively inexpensive Odoo, there are of course great opportunities.

In the last years, more than 95% of our implementations have been successful. To achieve this, we have constantly improved our methodology and analyzed, which key aspects differentiate successful projects from others. Below we have summarized these aspects within the categories "people & responsibilities" and "keeping it simple".

In the next few months we will present in a small series of blogs some of the most important challenges that should be considered when implementing a company management software.

People & Responsibility

The customer defines the business needs (why and what), but the way it is satisfied (how) is determined by us.

We challenge the customer demand and ensure the cost of customization is worth the benefit.

Choose the right project leader. They must be problem solvers and understand the business demand.

Train the key user early in the project. They should be confident in the product and be committed to the project.

Don`t focus on user satisfaction during the project, because it evolves constantly during the project and expectations are very different (User vs. CEO).

Keeping it Simple

Fewer meetings, less paperwork, faster decisions, less attention to minor details, limit the scope for a first go live.

Avoid not deciding intermediaries and reduce the number of stakeholders to accelerate decision making.

Go on customer site only when needed e.g. for change management and user training.

Limit custom development to the minimum necessary, because of increased cost and complexity.

Keep budget and time under control. Communicate properly in case new requirements need further resources.
